State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam on Thursday said a highly skilled and professional diplomatic corps is essential to effectively promote Bangladesh’s national interests under the “Bangladesh First” policy.
She made the remarks while speaking as chief guest at the certificate-awarding ceremony of the Refreshers’ Course for Directors 2026, held at the Foreign Service Academy in the capital.
The state minister stressed the need to enhance diplomats’ expertise in key priority areas, including climate change, transboundary water sharing, migration, free trade agreements, peacekeeping and peacebuilding, as well as the Rohingya crisis.
Speaking at the event as special guest, Secretary (East and West) of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ambassador Md Nazrul Islam highlighted the importance of the refresher course in strengthening the professional capacity of mid-level diplomats.
He said the training programme helps officials develop the knowledge and skills required to respond to evolving global and diplomatic challenges.
Rector of the Foreign Service Academy Ambassador Muhammad Abdul Muhith, who delivered the welcome address, said modern diplomats must be analytical, adaptable, composed and ethical, adding that the academy remains committed to producing skilled professionals through continuous training.
The Foreign Service Academy organises the Refreshers’ Course every year as part of its ongoing professional development programme.
This year, 13 directors of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs successfully completed the course and received certificates at the ceremony.
Senior officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Foreign Service Academy, along with resource persons, were also present at the event.
