Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has detained six citizens of Myanmar while they were illegally entering Bangladesh by crossing the border.
They were detained on Tuesday evening from the Chakmapara area of Naikkhongchhari. Members of the 34 BGB’s Baishfari BOP detained the Myanmar nationals about 50 metres inside the border from pillar number 36.
BGB Commander Lieutenant Colonel SM Khairul Alam said the detainees are members of the Tanchangya community of Myanmar and all are men. During primary questioning, they said they crossed the border into Bangladesh to hunt pigs.
The six detained citizens are: Mongphutai Tanchangya (30), Kalu Tanchangya (26), Mucha Tanchangya (45), Mongchiu Tanchangya (30), Vettia Tanchangya (25) and Ituwain Tanchangya (17). All of them are residents of Medai village in Tumbru of Maungdaw district in Myanmar’s Rakhine State.
BGB said the detainees were handed over to Naikkhongchhari Police Station around 9pm.
Naikkhongchhari Police Station’s officer-in-charge Abdul Baten Mridha said, “The six detained Myanmar citizens were handed over to the police station from Baishfari BOP. Legal procedures are underway against them.”
Earlier, on 23 November, BGB detained five members of the Myanmar army and border guard force at the same border route while they were attempting illegal entry. They were detained by BGB after entering Naikkhongchhari’s Monjaypara near international pillar number 42.
