Six people, including four firefighters, were injured after a fire broke out at a chemical warehouse in Hemayetpur, Savar, early Sunday.
The blaze erupted shortly after 1am at a warehouse inside a six-storey building in Shahidullah Housing in the Padma Mor area. Firefighters brought the fire under control after nearly six hours of effort.
Local residents first noticed smoke coming from the building and alerted the Fire Service. Two firefighting units initially rushed to the scene and began operations.
Several chemical drums inside the warehouse exploded repeatedly as firefighters worked to contain the blaze, leaving four Fire Service personnel and two local residents injured.
The injured firefighters were identified as Md Shamim, Md Ujjwal and Md Omar Faruque, while Monwar Hossain, a Fire Service team leader, was also hurt.
The two injured residents were identified as Mashiur Rahman and Jony.
Mashiur, 40, sustained serious injuries and was admitted to Enam Medical College Hospital in Savar. He was later reported to be out of danger.
Monwar said the Fire Service received information about the blaze at around 12:30am and worked continuously from 1:00am until about 7:00am to bring it fully under control.
People associated with the factory claimed that the fire originated from an electric meter. However, the Fire Service said the cause had yet to be confirmed.
An investigation will be conducted to determine the cause of the fire and assess the extent of the damage, Fire Service officials said.
