At least six people injured in a clash between supporters of Jamaat-e-Islami and BNP in Ujolpur village of Begumpur Union under the Chuadanga-2 constituency.
The incident occurred around 9pm on Friday, triggering tension in the area. Police reached the spot quickly and brought the situation under control.
Both parties claimed that their respective election offices were vandalised during the confrontation, but their accounts contradicted each other.
According to Jamaat, two of their injured leaders identified as Mehedi Hasan, 32, secretary of Ward No. 1 of Darshana Municipality Jamaat, and Hasan Tarique, 27, labour welfare secretary of Darshana Municipality Jamaat, were taken to Chuadanga Sadar Hospital for initial treatment.
BNP sources said three of their supporters were hurt. They were named as Mujibur Rahman, Junaid Hossain and Ashiq.
Mosharraf Hossain, ameer of Jamaat in Begumpur Union, alleged that BNP supporters held a procession at night and some of them, allegedly intoxicated, were dancing and making noise in front of the Ujolpur Jamaat election office. When Jamaat activists protested, the BNP supporters reportedly attacked them.
He claimed the attackers assaulted Jamaat leaders, including the Ameer, and vandalised the office furniture. He denied BNP’s claim that their office was damaged.
Aslam Hossain, office secretary of BNP’s Darshana police station unit, said the rally was peaceful. He said some supporters were dancing and chanting slogans when Jamaat activists insulted them, leading to a brief altercation.
He alleged that three BNP supporters were injured and accused Jamaat activists of vandalising their election office. He denied the claim that Jamaat’s office was damaged or that any of their members were attacked.
Dr Al Imran Jewel, duty doctor at Chuadanga Sadar Hospital, said Mehedi Hasan and Hasan Tarique were brought to the emergency department around midnight with head and facial injuries, apparently caused by a hard object.
They received treatment and were discharged the same night.
Darshana Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Mehedi Hasan said the incident involved a chase and counter-chase between the two groups.
He confirmed that two Jamaat activists and one BNP supporter were injured. He also said no written complaint has been filed yet.
