Two daughters living in Bangladesh were given the opportunity to see their mother one last time at the Bhomra Land Port border in Satkhira after she died in India.
The meeting took place at the zero point on Wednesday afternoon, arranged jointly by the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and India’s Border Security Force (BSF) on humanitarian grounds.
Family sources said Zarina Khatun, 98, wife of Gafur Mondal of Ghojadanga village under Basirhat subdivision in North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal, died on Tuesday night due to old-age complications.
Her daughters, Shirina Khatun and Aleya Khatun, live in Bharukhali village of Hardadaha area in Satkhira Sadar upazila after marriage.
After receiving news of their mother’s death, they applied to BGB for permission to see her. At the same time, family members in India submitted a similar request to the BSF.
Considering the humanitarian aspect and following border protocols, BGB’s Bhomra BOP under Satkhira 33 Battalion and the BSF camp at Ghojadanga jointly arranged to bring the body to the zero point.
Under the supervision of both forces, members of the two families were allowed to meet for a limited time. The body was later handed back to the Indian side.
Naib Subedar Aheduzzaman of Bhomra BOP under Satkhira 33 BGB confirmed the matter and said the meeting was arranged jointly by BGB and BSF on humanitarian considerations.
