Bangladesh’s vibrant folk theatre tradition is taking centre stage this December as the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy launches a full month of Jatra festivities.

From December 1 to 31, the Experimental Theatre Hall will come alive every evening at 6:30 pm with performances by Jatra troupes arriving from across the country. Each group will retain full earnings from ticket sales, priced at an accessible 100 taka, ensuring direct financial support for artists who keep this centuries-old theatrical form thriving.

Adding to the celebratory atmosphere, the open courtyard of the National Theatre Hall will host daily patriotic Jatra song sessions at 5 pm, filling the space with music that honours the spirit of Bangladesh’s liberation.

Organised by the Drama and Film Department of the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, the festival aims not just to entertain but to spark renewed appreciation for Jatra, a cornerstone of Bengali cultural expression.
