SM Shahriar Alam Shammo’s elder Sardar Amirul Islam Sagar suddenly became a cyberspace celebrity in Bangladesh as hundreds of netizens started active discussion relating to his joining of National Citizen Party-NCP, which surprised many.
SM Shahriar Alam Shammo, a leader of the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), a student wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), was stabbed to death near Suhrawardy Uddyan in Dhaka on May 13, 2025. Shammo was the literature and publication affairs secretary of JCD’s Sir AF Rahman Hall unit and a student of the Institute of Education and Research at Dhaka University. The incident sparked protests and a strike by DU students demanding justice.
Sagar, who previously served as the Liberation War Research Secretary in the central committee of Chhatra Dal, has been appointed as a member of the newly formed NCP’s Dhaka North city coordination committee, which was announced on Sunday (June 1). He confirmed his inclusion in the committee.
In August 2017, Sagar was expelled from Chhatra Dal after he posted a Facebook status paying respect to Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. However, the expulsion was withdrawn on April 17, 2019, and he was reinstated into the organization.
Shahriar Alam Shammo, the Literature and Publication Secretary of Chhatra Dal’s Sir AF Rahman Hall unit at Dhaka University, was fatally stabbed by unidentified assailants near the open stage at Suhrawardy Udyan on May 13.
In response, Chhatra Dal has continued protests demanding justice for Shammo killing. As part of the movement, the organization staged a week-long blockade at Shahbagh, calling for the resignation of the DU Vice Chancellor and Proctor.
Shammo had played an active role in recent student and public uprisings, with his brother Sagar also being significantly involved.
Following the withdrawal of his expulsion in 2019, Sagar had said, “Now that the expulsion order has been lifted, I can once again actively participate in the movement for the release of our leader Begum Khaleda Zia and the restoration of democracy.”
However, after joining the NCP, Sagar stated, “Since leaving student politics in 2019, I had not been involved in any political activities. I believe in the nationalist ideology of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman. My father was also a founding leader of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal. By joining NCP, I aim to pursue nationalist politics beyond conventional boundaries.”
