A 19-year-old Class 12 student died after setting herself on fire inside a school in Delhi’s Krishna Nagar area in India on Saturday afternoon, with police suspecting suicide.
Police found the student’s burnt body behind the guard room at Sarvodaya Kanya Vidyalaya. According to officials, she poured petrol on herself before setting herself ablaze, reports NDTV.
The motive behind her death has not yet been officially established. However, a preliminary investigation has revealed a possible love angle.
During an initial search, police recovered three notes from the student’s school bag. Teachers said officers also seized several suspicious items from the bag, although the exact nature of these items has not been confirmed.
Meanwhile, a family member alleged that the school administration had failed to inform them about the incident.
“I came here looking for her by myself. No one informed us anything,” she said.
Delhi Police confirmed that a Crime Team had been called to inspect the scene and collect relevant evidence. Authorities said they were examining the circumstances leading to the incident and that further investigation was under way.
The incident has caused an atmosphere of grief among the school administration and students.
