Opposition Leader and Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman has issued a fresh call for a “revolution” during a rally organised by the 11-party alliance in the capital’s Bijoynagar area.
The rally, held on Tuesday afternoon aimed to demand justice for “enforced disappearances, murders, and genocide”.
During the event, Nahid Islam, the Convener of the National Citizen Party (NCP) and Chief Whip of the Opposition in Parliament, demanded that the Awami League be banned as a political organisation.
Addressing the gathering, Shafiqur Rahman criticised the current administration, saying that the promises made regarding the trial of disappearances and killings after the BNP came to power have now been forgotten. He alleged that the government is instead appointing party loyalists to administrative positions, pushing the country back towards “one-party fascism”.
Shafiqur asserted that another revolution is required to overcome this situation and urged activists to remain prepared for such a move.
Nahid claimed that the Awami League was involved in numerous disappearances and murders over the past 17 years. He argued that the government has failed to ensure justice for these crimes and, as a result, demanded the resignation of the Chief Prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal.
Other leaders of the 11-party alliance also spoke at the rally, alleging that the judicial process for cases of genocide and enforced disappearance is being intentionally delayed. They said the sluggish pace is failing to meet public expectations.
To press home their demands for fair trials and accountability, the alliance has announced a countrywide protest march and rally to be held in all districts on 4 July.
