A man accused of being a serial rapist has been arrested by police in the capital’s Jatrabari area, according to a press release issued on Tuesday.
Rashedul Islam Rabbi (30) was apprehended during an operation in front of Dania College on Monday evening, said Jatrabari Police Station of Dhaka Metropolitan Police. Five mobile phones belonging to victims were recovered from his possession.
Police sources said Rabbi first created a fake Facebook account and, using a “female” voice, managed to take control of a victim’s mobile phone. Using the social media accounts and SIM card logged into that phone, he continued to use the “female” voice and targeted school and college students from the victim’s friend list.
Through deception, he took victims to the 5th floor of an under-construction building at Goalbarir Mor in Jatrabari and raped them, police said. He would also snatch cash, mobile phones, and gold ornaments from the victims.
Additionally, he recorded explicit videos of his victims and forced them to maintain relationships with him and give him money.
On 13 April, with the help of information technology, police identified the accused and arrested him. Three cases under the Pornography Control Act are currently pending against him, according to police sources.
