A court in Dhaka on Wednesday placed two individuals, including Harun-or-Rashid Munna, general secretary of the Awami League’s Jatrabari unit, on a two-day remand in connection with a murder case filed over the killing of a man during the July mass uprising.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Hasib Ullah Piyas passed the order after a hearing in the afternoon.
Another accused, Kamrul Hasan Ripon, president of the Dhaka South unit of the Swechchhasebak League, was also placed on remand in the same case.
Earlier, the investigating officer of Jatrabari Police Station Sub-Inspector Nazmul Hasan produced the accused before the court and sought a seven-day remand for each, stating that evidence had been found linking them to the killing.
The investigation officer said custodial interrogation was necessary to identify those who allegedly gave instructions and to arrest other absconding suspects.
The prosecution also prayed for remand, arguing that it was essential for the sake of a fair and thorough investigation.State counsel Advocate Harun-or-Rashid confirmed the court’s order.
According to the case statement, victim Md Parvez Mia took part in the anti-discrimination student movement on 5 August, 2024, when he was shot around 5pm.
He was first taken to Mugda Medical College Hospital and later shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
A murder case was filed with the Jatrabari Police Station on 29 October in connection with the incident.
