Security has been stepped up at the International Crimes Tribunal following intelligence reports of a possible sabotage attempt, Chief Prosecutor Md Aminul Islam said on Thursday.
He said the threat was identified as trials involving influential accused approach their final stages or await verdicts.
Speaking to reporters at his office on Thursday, Aminul said security at the tribunal had been increased from previous levels.
“We have some intelligence that there could be an attempt to sabotage the tribunal when trials against influential accused are nearing conclusion or verdicts are pending,” he said.
The chief prosecutor said the information had been shared with law enforcement agencies and necessary instructions had been issued to strengthen security at the tribunal.
He, however, did not disclose details of the intelligence or identify anyone suspected of planning an attack.
Several high-profile cases are currently pending before the International Crimes Tribunal, including allegations of enforced disappearances and killings during the Awami League government, the alleged mass killings at Shapla Chattar and crimes against humanity allegedly committed during the July uprising.
Former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, former Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader, several former and serving military officers, and former police and Rapid Action Battalion officials are among those accused in the cases.
