Education Adviser C R Abrar has said that secondary education is a highly important stage of the country’s overall education system. He said, “For a long time, this stage lacked the desired training structure, which is now being fulfilled.”

He made these remarks on Saturday at a views-exchange meeting held at the Teachers’ Training College in Faridpur during a visit to a 56-day training programme for newly appointed teachers at the secondary and madrasa levels.

The event was organised by the Learning Acceleration in Secondary Education (LAISE) Project under the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education.

Noting that reforms in the education sector are continuing despite the government’s limited resources, financial crisis and multiple challenges, the education adviser said, “When we assumed responsibility, the state’s financial situation was critical, yet the government has continued regular loan repayments, salary payments and development activities.”

Highlighting the need for substantial investment in the education and health sectors, he said, “Despite limitations, we have undertaken many initiatives including training.”

Explaining the importance of training, C R Abrar said, “At the end of the training, based on evaluations, teachers will clearly identify areas where there is scope for improvement.”

He further said, “Without a critical perspective, real value addition is not possible.”

Emphasising the restoration of teachers’ moral standing in society, he said, “Only teachers can nurture students in humanity, morality and civic awareness.”

At the event, he urged teachers to avoid political bias in their professional lives and stressed the importance of turning educational institutions into centres for practising values.

The education adviser concluded by saying, “This training programme for secondary teachers is a major step toward improving the quality of education. Despite limitations, the government is giving this initiative the highest priority.”

The programme was attended by the Chairman of the Anti-Corruption Commission Mohammad Abdul Momen, the Director General of the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education, as well as representatives of the local administration, civil society, trainers and participating teachers.
