A Supreme Court lawyer has served a legal notice to the authorities concerned, demanding a secure official residence for the prime minister.

Md Ilias Ali Mondal, joint organising secretary of the Bogura unit of BNP Lawyers’ Forum, sent the notice by registered post, treating it as a matter of public interest litigation.

The notice was addressed to the Cabinet Secretary, as well as the Secretaries of Housing and Public Works, Prime Minister’s Office, Local Government, Public Administration, Law, Parliament Affairs, and the Inspector General of Police.

It urged immediate action and warned that if visible and effective measures are not taken promptly, a writ petition will be filed with the High Court along with other necessary legal steps.

The notice stated that following the July 2024 mass uprising, the prime minister’s official residence, Gonobhaban, was converted into a public museum. Since then, no visible or effective steps have been taken to designate, construct, or renovate a safe and suitable government residence for the prime minister and his family.

Ensuring adequate security, dignity, and appropriate residential facilities for the prime minister is described as a matter of national importance.

It further emphasised that as head of government, the prime minister is entitled to a secure, formally designated official residence to safeguard the executive branch’s security, continuity, and smooth functioning. The apparent inaction and failure of the authorities to take visible measures have caused public concern and raised serious questions regarding administrative responsibility and national security.
