A 40-year-old Saudi expatriate died under mysterious circumstances at Hotel Ramna in the capital’s Gulistan area on Friday afternoon.
The deceased was identified as Al-Amin, a resident of the Kaliganj Police Station area in Gazipur. He returned to Bangladesh from Saudi Arabia on 13 June.
According to Sagarika Akter, a young woman who brought Al-Amin to the hospital, the two had met on Facebook six months ago. Sagarika, a nursing student at a college in Khulna and wife of one Sujon, hailed from Mollahat Upazila in Bagerhat.
Sagarika claimed she travelled to Dhaka on Friday morning without informing her husband or family to meet Al-Amin, who had also travelled from Gazipur to Gulistan. She said the meeting was intended for her to collect certain items sent by an acquaintance in Saudi Arabia through Al-Amin.
The pair reportedly checked into room 923 on the ninth floor of Hotel Ramna. Sagarika told reporters that shortly after entering the room, Al-Amin went to the bathroom, after which she heard a loud noise. Upon investigating, she found him lying unconscious on the bathroom floor.
With the assistance of hotel staff, she rushed him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), where attending physicians pronounced him dead.
DMCH Police Camp In-charge (Inspector) Md Faruk confirmed the death and said the body is currently being held at the morgue. He added that Ramna Police Station has been notified to investigate the incident.
