Saoirse Ronan has been tapped to portray Linda McCartney, wife of Sir Paul McCartney, in director Sam Mendes’ upcoming four-part Beatles biopic project: a bold cinematic undertaking from Sony Pictures.
The four-time Oscar nominee will star opposite Paul Mescal, who takes on the role of Paul McCartney. Linda and Paul married in 1969, forming both a romantic and musical partnership. She later performed as keyboardist and harmony vocalist in McCartney’s post-Beatles band Wings. Linda McCartney passed away from cancer in 1998 at the age of 56.
Sony has yet to officially comment on Ronan’s casting, but the film’s ensemble already features an impressive line-up: Harris Dickinson as John Lennon, Joseph Quinn as George Harrison and Barry Keoghan as Ringo Starr. Additional casting details are expected in the coming months.
Mendes’ ambitious project will consist of four standalone films, each told from the perspective of one member of the legendary band. The narratives will overlap, ultimately weaving together to chronicle The Beatles’ extraordinary rise from Liverpool’s local music scene to global superstardom, culminating in their breakup in 1970.
According to Sony, all four instalments will premiere theatrically in April 2028 as part of what’s being described as the world’s first “binge-able cinema experience.” The precise release structure, however, remains under wraps.
Importantly, the films mark the first fully authorised Beatles biopics, with McCartney, Ringo Starr and the families of John Lennon and George Harrison granting Mendes and Sony access to the band’s life stories and complete musical catalogue.
Ronan, best known for her acclaimed performances in ‘Atonement’, ‘Brooklyn’, ‘Lady Bird’ and ‘Little Women’, continues to balance major studio projects with independent work. She recently starred in and produced the 2024 drama ‘The Outrun’ and led Steve McQueen’s ‘Blitz’.
