The investigation into the murder of journalist couple Sagar Sarwar and Meherun Runi has so far spanned 12 years, 8 months and 21 days, involving multiple agencies including police, DB and RAB, Attorney General Md Ruhul Quddus Kazal told journalists on Sunday.

The disclosure came after the High Court granted the task force investigating the case an additional six months to complete its work.

In response to a state petition, a High Court bench comprising Justice Fatema Najib and Justice AFM Saiful Karim issued the order on Sunday.

Speaking to journalists later at his office, the Attorney General detailed the long investigation process. The police station first investigated for four days, followed by the Detective Branch for two months and two days. Subsequently, RAB conducted a lengthy investigation, during which progress reports were submitted at various times.

Eight suspects have been arrested during the investigation. Of them, seven are in jail and one is absconding after being released on bail.

The attorney general said the investigation is not yet complete, and the new task force is facing difficulties in its work due to deficiencies in the transfer of information from the previous investigating agencies.

It was for this reason that more time was requested, and the court granted six months for the task force to continue its probe, he added.
