A rural and homeopathic physician was abducted at gunpoint from his residence in Baharchhara union of Teknaf upazila in Cox’s Bazar on Sunday, prompting a joint rescue operation by police and the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB).

The incident occurred around 1pm in the Noakhaliya Jummpara area of Ward No 9 in Baharchhara union.

The victim, Kamal Uddin, also known as BA Kamal, 65, son of the late Maqbul Ahmad, had been providing medical services locally.

According to family members, a group of armed miscreants entered his house from the nearby hilly area and held the family members hostage at gunpoint before forcibly taking him away towards the deep forest.

As the attackers were carrying firearms, family members were unable to resist, they said. Police and BGB were informed immediately after the assailants left the scene.

Local Union Parishad member Ilyas urged the administration to rescue the physician quickly and ensure that those involved are brought to justice.

Inspector Md Abu Sayeed of the Teknaf Baharchhara Investigation Centre said police were deployed immediately after receiving information about the abduction.

He added that other law enforcement agencies had joined the operation to rescue the victim, while the identities and motives of the abductors were yet to be confirmed.
