A video showing Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Atanu Banik of Chunarughat Police Station in Habiganj allegedly accepting a bribe from a case plaintiff has gone viral on social media, causing a major stir across the district police administration.
The footage, which spread rapidly on Facebook on Tuesday afternoon, shows ASI Atanu Banik receiving money directly from the complainant. In the audio track of the video, the plaintiff is heard saying, “You asked for 10,000 taka. I gave 6,000 taka earlier, and now I am giving 4,000 taka”.
This is not the first complaint brought against ASI Banik. Previously, while conducting a case investigation, he allegedly attempted to outrage the modesty of a woman. Following that incident, the victim’s family submitted a written complaint directly to the superintendent of police (SP) of Habiganj seeking justice.
Commenting on the latest video, the Chunarughat Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Saiful Islam said that appropriate departmental action would be taken after a thorough investigation into the matter.
The development comes immediately after another officer from the same police station faced action.
On Monday, ASI Elias Hossain of Chunarughat Police Station was withdrawn from duty and attached to the Police Lines on Monday night after a video went viral in which he claimed to have purchased his police uniform using bribe money.
