Intern doctors at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH) have withdrawn their 24-hour work stoppage following assurances from hospital authorities over their demands.
The decision was announced at a press conference held at the emergency department on Wednesday.
The strike began at 9am on Tuesday after an altercation with relatives of a deceased patient.
The patient, Juliara Begum, 50, from Dhormohata village under Charghat upazila, died on Monday night while undergoing treatment in Ward 36.
Her two sons alleged negligence by doctors led to her death. Intern doctors said the attendants behaved aggressively following the incident. They said there was no negligence in treatment and the patient required admission to the intensive care unit.
They said a serial had been arranged, but no ICU bed was immediately available as other patients were already waiting.
They added that the on-duty intern doctor was attending two other critically ill patients at the time.
The interns said they went on strike with four demands, including improved security and the presence of mid-level physicians in wards. They said the hospital administration responded positively, leading to the withdrawal of the strike.
Rajshahi Medical College Hospital spokesperson Shonkor K Bishwash said the hospital is treating patients far beyond its capacity. He said only 262 intern doctors are currently providing services.
He urged all concerned to cooperate with doctors, saying they are working under heavy pressure to maintain healthcare services.
