Ryan Rickelton played the innings of his life, but Mumbai Indians still ended up on the losing side as Sunrisers Hyderabad stunned them by six wickets at the Wankhede Stadium on Wednesday.
After Mumbai chose to bat first, Rickelton delivered a brilliant unbeaten 123 off just 55 balls. It was his first IPL century and it came in only 44 balls, making it the fastest hundred by a Mumbai Indians batter. His knock is also now the highest individual score for MI.
Rickelton gave Mumbai a flying start. He and Will Jacks put on 93 runs in only 43 balls for the first wicket. Jacks attacked hard too before falling for 46 from 22 deliveries.
Mumbai finished on a massive 243 for 5. It looked like a winning total, but poor bowling and sloppy fielding let them down badly. Even Jasprit Bumrah had an off day as Hyderabad’s batters attacked from the start.
Travis Head led the chase with a brutal 76 from just 30 balls. Heinrich Klaasen then stayed calm and finished the job with an unbeaten 65 off 30 balls.
Sunrisers chased down the huge target with eight balls left, sealing one of their best wins of the season. Rickelton’s record night ended in disappointment as Mumbai wasted a historic knock.
