Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has said that restoring people’s confidence in the police and improving the country’s law and order situation remain the top priorities of his government.
The prime minister made the remarks in a message on the occasion of National Police Week 2026, a four-day programme that begins on Sunday.
A professional and responsible police force is very important for safeguarding the country’s stability and public confidence, the prime minister said.
“Police Week is a unique moment to fulfil the commitment of the police to be a reliable force,” he added.
Tarique Rahman said the present government is implementing an elaborate programme to build a prosperous, self-reliant and justice-based democratic country.
However, he noted that this target would be difficult to achieve without making public life secure and relaxed.
As a law enforcement agency, the role of police is very important. In every national crisis, the force has played its role very professionally and sincerely, the prime minister said.
The role of police in the last general election clearly demonstrated that police can work efficiently when given a congenial and favourable atmosphere.
Not only within the country but also in the international arena, the police force has shown its success, the PM added, noting that their contribution to UN peacekeeping missions has glorified Bangladesh’s dignity.
The prime minister said a democratic government has been established through a free and fair election after a long one and a half decades. Peace and relief have also returned to public life.
“People now want to see a country free from a culture of disappearance, abduction and fear,” he said.
The police force must play the highest role in maintaining such a peaceful society, he added.
The prime minister urged police to play a more effective role in curbing mob violence, teenage gangs and drugs.
“It is indispensable to ensure the stability of the state to keep the democratic progress of the country sustainable,” he said.
On the occasion of Police Week, the prime minister greeted all former and incumbent members of the police force and wished the event every success.
