Marcus Rashford marked his Champions League return in style, scoring twice as Barcelona secured a 2-1 victory over Newcastle United at St James’ Park, leaving the hosts’ European campaign off to a losing start.
On loan from Manchester United, Rashford broke a tight contest open with two brilliant second-half strikes. In front of England head coach Thomas Tuchel, he met Jules Kounde’s cross with a precise header in the 58th minute, sending Newcastle keeper Nick Pope the wrong way and silencing the typically raucous Tyneside crowd. Nine minutes later, he produced an even more spectacular moment, hammering a 20-yard strike into the top corner, his first Champions League goals in almost four years.
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe made a surprise selection, leaving new £69m signing Nick Woltemade on the bench in favour of Anthony Gordon as the central forward. Gordon struggled to make an impact, as Barcelona gradually imposed their dominance, with Rashford emerging as the decisive finisher.
Rashford received a standing ovation from Barcelona supporters when he was substituted with ten minutes remaining. Newcastle offered a late glimmer of hope when Gordon netted in the first minute of seven added minutes, but Barcelona held on to claim the win.
