Rangpur Metropolitan Police Commissioner Abdul Mabud has been removed from his post following the high-profile murders of four people, including retired schoolteacher Ganapati Chakrabarti Jewel, his wife, and their child.

He has been succeeded by Md Mahbubur Rashid, the deputy inspector general (DIG) of the police’s Special Branch (SB).

The administrative change was announced on Tuesday in a notification signed by Tousif Ahmed, deputy secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs. The official notification stated that Special Branch DIG Md Mahbubur Rashid has been transferred to the post of Rangpur Metropolitan Police Commissioner.

Earlier, during a press conference on 23 August, the outgoing commissioner had announced the detention of two youths in connection with brutal murders. At one point during the briefing, Mabud broke down in tears while describing the brutal details of the killings.
