Nasima Begum, a survivor of the 2013 Rana Plaza tragedy who was miraculously rescued after being trapped under rubble for three days, lost her life in Daulatdia ferry ghat tragedy.
She was travelling to Savar and Dhaka in a struggle to change her fortune, marking a tragic end to a decade-long survival battle.
According to the Parbatipur upazila administration, Nasima had travelled to her niece’s home in Rajbari on 19 February in search of a livelihood.
On the day of the accident, last Wednesday, she was heading towards Savar with her niece when their bus, operated by Souhardya Paribahan, lost control and plunged into the Padma River at the Daulatdia-Paturia ferry ghat area.
Nasima, along with her pregnant niece and a four-year-old child, perished in the accident. Law enforcement agencies recovered their bodies from the river approximately six and a half hours after the bus submerged.
She was laid to rest at her family graveyard in the village of Madhyatrayi, Parbatipur, following Jummah prayers on Friday.
Md Saddam Hossain, the Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) of Parbatipur, told TIMES that Nasima had been facing extreme hardship while living with her child since the death of her husband a few months ago.
“She was heading towards Dhaka and Savar with her niece in search of work due to her poor financial condition. This journey for a livelihood became her final journey,” he stated.
The local upazila administration has provided Tk25,000 in financial assistance to the bereaved family.
