India has extended its support to Bangladesh in the country’s quest for justice regarding the atrocities perpetrated by Pakistani forces during the 1971 Liberation War.
Randhir Jaiswal, the spokesperson for India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), highlighted the horrors of “Operation Searchlight,” describing it as a period of systematic and targeted killings of millions of Bangladeshis.
He further noted the widespread sexual violence against women carried out by Pakistani forces during the conflict, reports NDTV.
The MEA spokesperson emphasised that the campaign triggered a massive humanitarian crisis, forcing millions of people to flee their homes and seek refuge in India.
“The genocide involved the systematic and targeted killing of millions of Bangladeshi people, innocent people, and mass sexual violence against women,” Jaiswal stated, adding that these acts “shook the conscience of the world at large”.
He further said despite the gravity of these crimes, Pakistan “remains in denial to this very day”. Jaiswal confirmed India’s solidarity, stating, “We support Bangladesh in its desire for justice.”
The statement follows remarks from Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, who described the events of 25 March 1971 as a “pre-planned massacre.”
Marking “Genocide Day,” the prime minister paid his respects to the martyrs and characterised the date as one of the most “disgraceful and brutal days” in the nation’s history.
Tarique detailed how Pakistani forces opened fire indiscriminately on civilians, teachers, and intellectuals at various locations, including Dhaka University, Rajarbagh Police Lines, and Pilkhana, resulting in a staggering loss of life.
Regarding the current diplomatic landscape, Jaiswal noted that India is committed to maintaining and further advancing its multi-dimensional relationship with Bangladesh.
He recalled that following the formation of the BNP government last month, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi sent a congratulatory letter through Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla.
The letter, delivered during the swearing-in ceremony, outlined India’s vision for future bilateral relations.
Jaiswal concluded by stating that discussions are ongoing between both nations as India seeks to not only maintain but also “strengthen and expand” its diverse ties with Bangladesh.
