The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has initiated the process of compiling an independent list of extortionists, parallel to the police, to facilitate swift legal action against offenders.
Wing Commander MZM Intekhab Chowdhury, Director of RAB’s Legal and Media Wing, disclosed this information during a press briefing held at the RAB Media Centre in Karwan Bazar on Saturday afternoon.
According to a RAB official, the preparation of this “unbiased” list follows directives from the Ministry of Home Affairs. All 15 battalions of the elite force have already commenced field-level operations and intensified intelligence surveillance. Officials stated that no individual included in the list will be spared.
When questioned about the potential inclusion of political figures, Wing Commander Intekhab Chowdhury emphasised that the list would be entirely neutral. “The list will be completely unbiased. There will be no partiality. Action will be taken against the criminal, regardless of identity,” he stated, adding that operations would commence as soon as the list is finalised, potentially as early as today.
Regarding recent allegations of extortion demands made to a hospital entrepreneur in Kalyanpur, the Director noted that the matter was initially referred to the police and is currently being verified. Simultaneously, RAB has launched a shadow investigation into the incident, promising rapid action if the allegations are proven.
The crackdown is not limited to any specific sector. The list aims to cover highway-centric extortion in the transport sector, illegal toll collection from market traders, and coercive tactics used against various institutions. Criminals at all levels, from low-level operatives to high-ranking figures, are being considered.
RAB further noted that victims often refrain from filing formal complaints due to fear or security concerns. Consequently, the force is relying on intelligence reports, field-level investigations, and data from various sources to prepare the list.
Addressing a recent major seizure of Yaba in Chattogram, the Director mentioned that while those caught on the ground are typically lower-level members, efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend the “godfathers” or masterminds based on their statements.
Responding to queries regarding external pressure on law enforcement agencies, Wing Commander Intekhab asserted that RAB is currently working independently and without any illegal pressure. “No one is above the law. Whoever the criminal is, they will be brought to justice,” he concluded.
