Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump spoke by phone on Wednesday about Iran and Ukraine, the Kremlin said.
A Kremlin aide said Putin proposed steps to resolve the dispute over Iran’s nuclear programme and suggested a temporary ceasefire in Ukraine to coincide with next month’s World War II anniversary, Al Jazeera reports.
Axios reported Trump rejected Iran’s peace plan, insisting the US blockade of Iranian ports would continue until Tehran agreed to a nuclear deal.
“The blockade is somewhat more effective than the bombing. They are choking like a stuffed pig, and it is going to be worse for them. They can’t have a nuclear weapon,” Trump was quoted as saying.
Iran had earlier floated reopening the Strait of Hormuz and deferring nuclear talks to a later date.
