Following the deaths of at least three people in a clash between law enforcement agencies and Jumma Chhatra Janata in Khagrachhari’s Guimara upazila, who were protesting the rape of a school student, demonstrators have now called for a blockade in all three hill districts: Rangamati, Bandarban, and Khagrachhari.
This programme was announced in a post on a Jumma Chhatra Janata Facebook page on Sunday night.
Informing that an indefinite road blockade has been ongoing in Khagrachhari since Saturday, Jumma Chhatra Janata stated: “Over the past few days, evidence has been found of extensive searches by the army across Khagrachhari town, along with incidents of beatings and arrests – which is never acceptable.”
It went on to add: “Furthermore, brutal reports have been received of the army opening fire on Jumma Chhatra Janata members in Guimara, and settlers looting shops and homes and setting them on fire. Four people have been killed and many injured in attacks by the army and settlers. We strongly condemn and protest this brutality and the absence of justice.”
