Renowned academic and researcher Professor Dr Ekramul Huque has joined as the new Vice-Chancellor of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET). He officially took over the charge as the 16th Vice-Chancellor of the university on the afternoon of 15 May 2026.
According to a notification issued by the Secondary and Higher Education Division of the Ministry of Education on 14 May 2026, the appointment was made for a four-year term.
The appointment was approved by the Honourable President and Chancellor in accordance with Sections 11(1) and 11(2) of the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology Ordinance, 1961.
Professor Dr Ekramul Huque is a distinguished figure in the country’s higher education and engineering research sectors. He began his teaching career as a lecturer at BUET in 1989. He was promoted to Assistant Professor in 1992, Associate Professor in 1997, and Professor in 2005. Since 2017, he has been serving as a Grade-1 Professor.
Throughout his career, he has held various significant administrative roles at BUET and is currently serving as the Director of the Bureau of Research, Testing and Consultation (BRTC).
A highly accomplished scholar, Dr Huque obtained his BSc in Engineering from the Department of Civil Engineering at BUET in 1989, securing third place in the merit list with honours marks. He later earned his PhD from the University of Tokyo, Japan, in 1996.
He is widely recognised at home and abroad for his contributions to education and research, having published more than 50 research papers in prestigious international journals.
Born in Cumilla, Dr Huque demonstrated exceptional brilliance throughout his student life.
He secured the 17th position in the combined merit list in his SSC examinations from Cumilla Zilla School in 1981 and the 5th position in the combined merit list in his HSC examinations from Cumilla Victoria College in 1983.
It is expected that under the visionary, wise, and research-based leadership of the newly appointed Vice-Chancellor, BUET will initiate a more dynamic journey in the fields of education, research, technological innovation, and international cooperation.
Stakeholders expressed hope that BUET will reach new heights as a world-class centre for engineering education and research under his guidance.
