President Mohammed Shahabuddin and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Thursday offered Eid-ul-Adha prayers at the country’s main Eid congregation held at the National Eidgah in the capital.
The prayers began at around 7:31am and were led by Baitul Mukarram National Mosque Khatib Mufti Muhammad Abdul Malek.
Following the prayers, a special munajat was offered seeking Almighty Allah’s blessings for peace, progress and prosperity of Bangladesh, alongside the welfare of its people and the Muslim Ummah worldwide.
At around 10am, he is scheduled to visit the graves of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman and former prime minister Khaleda Zia at Zia Udyan. He will then visit the grave of late Arafat Rahman Koko at Banani graveyard, followed by the grave of late Rear Admiral (retd) Mahbub Ali Khan at the Banani Military Graveyard.
Chief Justice, cabinet members, Supreme Court judges, lawmakers, senior political leaders, high-ranking civil and military officials, and people from different walks of life joined the congregation.
The Eid prayers were organised under the supervision of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), with separate arrangements made for women worshippers.
Eid-ul-Adha, one of the largest religious festivals of Muslims, is being celebrated across the country with due religious fervour and festivity.
After the prayers, the Prime Minister is scheduled to visit the graves of his parents — Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia — at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar and offer Fateha there.
Later in the afternoon, Tarique Rahman will attend the traditional “Barkhana” feast hosted by the Armed Forces at Dhaka Cantonment.
On Wednesday, the Prime Minister extended Eid-ul-Azha greetings to the people of Bangladesh and Muslims around the world.
In a video message, he said the holy festival had arrived once again carrying the message of sacrifice, piety and self-purification for the Muslim Ummah.
“I extend my greetings on the occasion of holy Eid-ul-Azha to Muslims in Bangladesh and across the world. I also wish all people of the country, regardless of political belief, religion or ethnicity, a happy Eid. Eid Mubarak,” he said.
