Expatriate Bangladeshis in Canada organised a prayer gathering following the death of former prime minister and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia.

The doa mahfil was held on Thursday after Maghrib prayers at the Baitul Mukarram Islamic Centre Calgary (BMICC), local time.

Devout worshippers from different political backgrounds joined the programme, where speakers remembered Khaleda Zia as an “uncompromising leader” and a “symbol of Bangladesh’s unity”.

One speaker said Khaleda Zia fought throughout her life on the issues of Bangladesh’s independence and sovereignty, adding that freedom-loving patriotic people would continue to draw courage and inspiration from her life as long as the struggle to protect independence and sovereignty continues in the country.

A special prayer was later offered seeking eternal peace for Khaleda Zia.
