Bangladesh Police has urged citizens to remain alert against what it described as false, misleading and provocative content being circulated on social media platforms targeting senior police officials and key government figures.
In a statement issued by Police Headquarters (PHQ) on Friday, the force said a “vested group” has been spreading fabricated and inflammatory posts on Facebook and other social media platforms with the intention of creating confusion among the public.
The statement strongly condemned such activities, saying the campaigns appeared aimed at disrupting the law and order situation, weakening police morale and tarnishing the image of the government.
According to PHQ, there is evidence that some individuals involved in spreading such propaganda have faced allegations of criminal activities.
The police said some of them allegedly sought undue intervention from police and other government offices and demanded money in exchange for stopping the circulation of misinformation.
The police headquarters requested citizens not to trust, share or circulate unverified and provocative information online. It also called on responsible members of society to play a role in preventing the spread of rumours and misleading content.
PHQ warned that legal action would be taken against those involved in such activities if the campaigns continue.
The statement added that Bangladesh Police is continuing its duties with professionalism, commitment and determination to maintain law and order and protect public safety while strengthening public confidence in the force.
