Home Adviser Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury has said that the police will have the most crucial role in ensuring that the upcoming national parliamentary election is free, fair, and impartial.
He stated that the people of the country, along with political parties and all sectors of society, expect the Bangladesh Police to shoulder the greatest responsibility in meeting those expectations.
“The nation hopes the police will set a new benchmark for professionalism and neutrality that will earn recognition not only at home but also internationally,” he added.
The adviser made these remarks on Monday morning while addressing a special crime review meeting organised by Bangladesh Police at the Hall of Pride of the Police Headquarters in Dhaka, where he attended as the chief guest.
The meeting was chaired by Inspector General of Police (IGP) Baharul Alam and attended virtually via CISCO video conference by Deputy Inspectors General (DIGs) from various ranges, Metropolitan Police Commissioners, and Superintendents of Police (SPs) from all districts. Senior officials from Police Headquarters were also present.
The adviser said that the enforcement of law is established not merely through power, but through justice, integrity, and humanity. Addressing the police, he remarked, “In the electoral field, you are not just enforcers of law and order — you are symbols of public safety, trust, and the protection of democratic rights.”
Speaking about the political atmosphere ahead of the election, the adviser noted that dialogue and discussions have begun among political parties. In this context, he cautioned that no police member should take sides with any political party, offer or accept special favours, or consider themselves political activists.
“The police already have a list of fascist elements involved in creating unrest in society and the state,” he said, adding that some criminals released on bail are re-engaging in offenses. He urged the force to intensify arrests to curb subversive activities, misinformation campaigns, and sudden flash processions, while ensuring no innocent person is harassed.
The adviser also directed senior officers to strengthen professionalism, team spirit, discipline, and morale among their subordinates. He instructed firm administrative and legal measures against personnel who defy command, lack discipline, or show disrespect to the government or the state.
He called for frequent Core Committee meetings at the district level, swift withdrawal of politically motivated cases, and the quick disposal of false cases. He stressed the need to activate the Special Branch for improved intelligence and to intensify drives to recover stolen, lost, or illegal weapons.
Jahangir Alam also urged enhanced security of Key Point Installations (KPIs) and warned that fire incidents and similar accidents are increasing, calling for heightened vigilance from both police and the public.
He made it clear that any attack on the police would not be tolerated, instructing immediate legal action against perpetrators. The adviser also highlighted the rise in cybercrime and urged young police officers to take a leading role in combating such offenses.
During the session, the adviser responded to queries from DIGs, metropolitan commissioners, and district SPs, and provided necessary guidance and recommendations for improving operational efficiency.
