Police are anticipating potential attacks and acts of sabotage targeting police vehicles across the country, prompting Police Headquarters to issue a maximum alert.
Following intelligence indicating that extremist groups or criminal elements may target police jeeps, pick-up trucks, buses, and other transport, all field-level units have been instructed to bolster security measures with immediate effect.
The directive was issued via an emergency dispatch from the Operations Control branch of Police Headquarters on Saturday.
Speaking to TIMES of Bangladesh on Saturday night, Police Headquarters spokesperson AIG AHM Shahadat Hossain played down concerns, explaining that instructions regarding the safety of personnel and transport are issued routinely.
However, he confirmed that alert messages were circulated after bombs and suspicious objects were discovered in several locations, whilst clarifying that there was no specific intelligence indicating an imminent strike.
According to a police source, the official dispatch stressed that there was no room for laxity or negligence in safeguarding vehicles. Units have been instructed to maintain maximum vigilance over transport both whilst on duty and when parked afterwards.
Should an operational vehicle need to make a temporary stop, it must be parked in a secure location under constant supervision. Under no circumstances may a vehicle be left unattended by its driver or assigned officer, effectively placing a strict ban on leaving police transport unsupervised.
The directive further mandated heightened security for all government vehicles kept at police stations, police lines, office compounds, and other designated sites after duty hours. It emphasised the need for regular patrols, enhanced surveillance, and strict vigilance to identify suspicious individuals or objects near parking areas.
Describing the matter as “highly important”, Police Headquarters called on officials across all metropolitan, range, district, and specialised units to enforce the measures rigorously.
Sources noted that these special instructions aim to protect the force’s own logistics amid broader efforts to fortify key installations during recent law and order concerns.
While the dispatch withheld specific details and did not name any particular organisation or threat source, field personnel have been ordered to remain on high alert and report any suspicious activity to senior authorities immediately.
