Police have filed a case against two men, including businessman Sohel Rana, over the preparation of six allegedly illegal election seals in Lakshmipur.

Sohel Rana has been shown as arrested in the case.

Additional Police Superintendent (Administration & Finance) Hosain Mohammad Raihan Kazemi confirmed the development to Times of Bangladesh on Wednesday afternoon.

Earlier, police had lodged the case at Lakshmipur Sadar Model Police Station.

The arrest followed a raid on Tuesday afternoon by an executive magistrate at Mariam Printers, located on the banks of Jubilee Dighi in Lakshmipur city.

The magistrate described the production of such election seals as completely illegal.

Sohel Rana, a resident of Tumchar area in Sadar Upazila, told the magistrate that an unknown person had asked him to make six seals.

Rana is the son of Khorshed Alam of Ward No 1, Tumchar village, and owns Mariam Printers.

On the day of his arrest, police seized six election seals, each with 16 compartments, along with a computer and a mobile phone from his shop. He was then taken into custody and brought to the police station.

Meanwhile, on the same night, Jamaat and BNP held press conferences over the incident.

Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Annie, BNP candidate for Lakshmipur -3 (Sadar) constituency, alleged Jamaat’s involvement in the seal scandal and claimed that Sohel Rana is a Jamaat activist.

ASP Hosain Mohammad Raihan Kazemi said, “Cases have been filed against two individuals. Sohel Rana has been shown as arrested, and his statement has been recorded under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.”

He added that in his statement, Sohel named Sharif Hossain Sourav, whom he identified as the general secretary of Jamaat in Ward No 4 of the municipality, as being involved in the incident.
