Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has extended his heartfelt greetings and congratulations to the people of the country and Bengali speakers across the world on the occasion of Pohela Baishakh 1433, the first day of the Bengali New Year.
In a message issued on Saturday, Tarique described Pohela Baishakh as a unique symbol of national history, culture, and identity. He noted that the day returns every year with a call for renewal, inspiring people to move forward by leaving behind the weariness and frustrations of the past.
Cultural and economic significance
The prime minister highlighted the profound link between Pohela Baishakh and the region’s agriculture, nature, and agrarian economic activities.
He observed that even in this golden age of information technology, farmers continue to determine their harvest cycles in harmony with nature.
Traditional celebrations such as Baishakhi fairs, processions, and Halkhata (the opening of new ledgers) reflect the multi-dimensional beauty of Bengali culture and foster a sense of unity among all.
Govt initiatives and the ‘Krishak Card’
Reflecting on the political landscape, Tarique stated that a new democratic government began its journey following the national elections held on February 12, ending one and a half decades of fascist exploitation and rule.
He emphasised that the government has immediately prioritised programmes to improve the living standards of people from all walks of life.
As part of the implementation of election pledges, the government has already introduced several initiatives, including Family Cards, Sports Cards, canal-digging programmes, and financial assistance for Imams, Muazzins, Khatibs, and religious leaders of other faiths.
Marking the first day of the Bengali New Year, the prime minister announced the launch of the “Krishak Card” (Farmer Card) distribution programme on 14 April. He expressed his firm expectation that this card will play a revolutionary role in supporting the nation’s farmers and the agricultural economy in the coming days.
A vision for peace and democracy
Tarique expressed hope that the inherent tolerance, generosity, and harmony found within the religious and social values of the Bangladeshi people would further strengthen democracy and solidify the coexistence of diverse opinions.
Citing the various crises and conflicts currently impacting the world, he stressed the urgent need for practicing peace, empathy, and mutual respect. He called upon the nation to rise above narrowness and selfishness to follow the path of human welfare.
The prime minister concluded his message by wishing that the New Year brings happiness, peace, and prosperity to everyone’s lives.
