Prime Minister Tarique Rahman proposed Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain’s name to preside over the first session of the 13th parliament, with support from the Opposition.
In the session, Jamaat-e-Islami’s Naib-e-Ameer and Deputy Leader of the Opposition, Syed Abdullah Muhammad Taher, extended support for the proposal to appoint Khandaker Mosharraf.
The session of the 13th parliament began around 11am on Thursday.
After a recitation from the Holy Quran, Tarique Rahman began his speech shortly before 11:15am. He paid tribute to all martyrs of movements and struggles since 1971.
He said that former prime minister Khaleda Zia fought for democracy until her last day, never compromising with autocracy or fascism. He expressed deep respect for her, as well as for former president Ziaur Rahman.
He emphasised that, regardless of political affiliation, he represents the people of Bangladesh. He said that the BNP’s goal is to make every family self-reliant, thereby building a self-reliant Bangladesh, and sought everyone’s cooperation. He added that there can be no opposition to such a vision.
