Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has directed the authorities to introduce automatic traffic light systems at 50 more locations across Dhaka as quickly as possible.
The directive was issued during a meeting on environmental pollution at the Prime Minister’s Office in Tejgaon on Saturday, according to the prime minister’s press wing. The meeting, which began around 12 noon, was chaired by the prime minister.
Participants discussed a range of measures to tackle air and noise pollution, including the use of environmentally friendly alternative technologies for brick production to reduce emissions from brick kilns.
The meeting also reviewed the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to curb excessive horn use, similar to AI-powered cameras already used in traffic management, and ways to expedite the removal of unfit, expired and environmentally polluting buses, trucks and other vehicles from the capital city’s roads.
The prime minister emphasised the need for effective measures to swiftly remove unfit, expired and highly polluting vehicles from the capital.
He also instructed the authorities to install automatic traffic light systems at at least 50 additional locations in Dhaka at the earliest opportunity, the press wing said.
Among others, Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Abdul Awal Mintoo, State Minister Sheikh Faridul Islam, State Minister for Water Resources Farhad Hossain Azad, Prime Minister’s Special Assistant Saimum Parvez, Dhaka South City Corporation Administrator Abdus Salam, Dhaka North City Corporation Administrator Shafiqul Islam Khan attended the meeting.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Mosleh Uddin Ahmed, Additional Commissioner (Traffic) Md Anisur Rahman, and senior officials from different ministries and government agencies were also present at the meeting.
