Pioneer Insurance PLC has been named Champion of the Insurance Innovation Challenge (IIC) 2026, a joint initiative of the SME Foundation (SMEF), under the Ministry of Industries, and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Bangladesh.
The company received a grant of approximately Tk 45.18 lakh at the award ceremony held at Shoilopropat Hall, Parjatan Bhaban, Agargaon, Dhaka, reads a press release.
Launched in January 2026, the Insurance Innovation Challenge sought regulator-approved, innovative, gender-responsive and technology-driven insurance solutions to address the unmet protection needs of Cottage, Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (CMSMEs).
CMSMEs contribute nearly one-fourth of Bangladesh’s GDP and generate substantial employment, yet many remain highly exposed to fire, accidents, health emergencies, natural disasters and other operational disruptions, with limited access to insurance and recovery finance.
Following a rigorous competitive selection process based on predefined technical, financial, innovation and impact criteria, Pioneer’s proposal was selected for its practical product design — Climate & All Risk Business Continuity Protection, Fire Protection and Health Protection through Hospitalisation Cash — as well as strong institutional partnerships, a technology-enabled delivery model and potential for scale.
The solution is designed to be embedded within financing arrangements, providing timely support to entrepreneurs after a covered event so they can meet loan obligations and resume business operations. It will also help financing institutions manage their credit risk and continue lending to affected clients.
Pioneer Insurance PLC, one of Bangladesh’s leading non-life insurers, leads the initiative through underwriting, claims management and overall programme implementation.
The consortium also includes K.M. Dastur & Company Limited (KMD), London, a global climate-risk and inclusive-insurance advisory firm serving as the technical partner; four microfinance institutions providing grassroots outreach and distribution to underserved and climate-vulnerable entrepreneurs; and Softograph Limited, which is developing an AI-enabled digital platform for awareness, enrolment, policy administration and claims management.
Together, these institutions bring the technical, financial, operational and technological capabilities required to deliver the solution at scale, drawing on the MFIs’ extensive last-mile networks across climate-vulnerable districts of Bangladesh.
“Our objective is to protect the enterprise and preserve its credit journey. Through this consortium, we can make recovery faster, finance more inclusive and CMSME growth more resilient. We sincerely thank UNDP, the SME Foundation and all distinguished guests for this recognition and for supporting innovation in inclusive insurance,” said Syed Shahriyar Ahsan, CEO & Managing Director of Pioneer Insurance PLC, whose strategic direction has strengthened the company’s focus on inclusive insurance, climate-risk protection and digital innovation for underserved entrepreneurs across Bangladesh.
The award ceremony was chaired by Anwar Hossain Chowdhury, Managing Director of SME Foundation, with a welcome address delivered by Md. Nazim Hasan Sattar, Deputy Managing Director of SME Foundation.
Sarder M Asaduzzaman, assistant resident representative of UNDP Bangladesh, and Chowdhury Liakat Ali, director of the Sustainable Finance Department at Bangladesh Bank, also attended.
Approximately 100 participants took part in the event, representing insurers and reinsurers, InsurTech and FinTech platforms, microfinance institutions, banks, policymakers and regulators, development partners and donors, start-ups, incubators, academia and the media.
For Pioneer Insurance PLC, the Champion title reflects the company’s broader commitment to inclusive insurance and financial resilience, bringing affordable, technology-enabled protection closer to CMSME entrepreneurs who need it most.
