Three people have died from burn injuries sustained during an arson attack on the house of an accused in the rape and murder of a teenage girl in Pabna Sadar upazila.
Two of the victims died on Tuesday morning at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka, while another had died on Monday afternoon at the same hospital.
The deceased were identified as Suman Sheikh, son of Tazir Uddin Sheikh of Purba Raghavpur village; Saiful Islam Sabbir, son of Shukur Hossain of Notunpara village; and Shapu, son of the late Yusuf from the same area.
All three were day labourers and had reportedly joined an agitated mob that set fire to the house in retaliation for the alleged rape and murder of the teenage girl.
Pabna Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Tariqul Islam confirmed the deaths on Tuesday afternoon, saying that legal proceedings are underway.
According to police and local sources, the incident occurred after the body of 15-year-old girl was recovered from the Padma River in Bharara union of Pabna Sadar on 3 June.
She was buried the following day.
After the burial, an angry mob set fire to the house of accused Naim in Pirpur area of Bharara union.
The blaze triggered a cylinder explosion, leaving several people critically injured.
Authorities said those injured were local residents, neighbours, and bystanders. No members of the accused’s family were present at the house at the time of the incident.
Police said the three deceased were among those who sustained severe burn injuries in the explosion and subsequent fire.
Earlier, on 4 June, the victim’s brother Khalid Hasan filed a case with Pabna Sadar Police Station, naming three individuals as accused.
Police later arrested the main suspect, Naim, along with two others.
Law enforcement officials said the accused have reportedly confessed to their involvement in the rape and murder of the girl.
The victim was the daughter of Azizul Pramanik of Purba Raghavpur village under Bharara union.
The accused in the case are Naim Pramanik, 22, son of late Kashem Pramanik; Yasin Sheikh, 21, son of Shafiq Sheikh; and Tuhin Pramanik, 20, son of Shimul Pramanik.
