Bangladesh Ansar and Village Defence Party Director General Major General Abdul Motaleb Sazzad Mahmud on Sunday urged newly recruited officers to place national interests above personal ambitions and work towards strengthening the force’s institutional capacity.

He made the call while addressing a reception for 19 newly appointed officers of the 45th Bangladesh Civil Service (Ansar) cadre at the force’s headquarters.

The director general said officers should pursue organisational excellence and contribute to national development alongside achieving personal success.

He described Bangladesh Ansar and Village Defence Party as the country’s largest community-based discipline and security force, with nearly 60 lakh members drawn from Battalion Ansar, Embodied Ansar, General Ansar, Village Defence Party and Town Defence Party.

Although members at different levels have distinct responsibilities, their collective contribution to national security, public order and public welfare remains essential, he said.

Mahmud stressed that better coordination across the organisation could further strengthen its capacity and effectiveness.

He said individual expectations and career goals might differ, but officers must align their ambitions with the force’s institutional objectives, values and responsibilities.

The director general also highlighted the force’s wider role beyond maintaining law and order.

He said Ansar members contributed to social security, public welfare, disaster management, humanitarian assistance, local peace and order, and socioeconomic development.

Greater engagement of its members could make these contributions more effective, he added.

Addressing the new officers, Mahmud urged them to build a well-organised, efficient and people-friendly force by drawing on the skills, experience and potential of personnel at every level.

He emphasised maintaining close communication with field-level members, understanding their expectations and practical experiences, and taking coordinated initiatives.

He also called for integrity, dedication, discipline, humanitarian values and responsible leadership in the discharge of official duties.

He expressed hope that their collective efforts would strengthen institutional capacity, public engagement and the force’s contribution to national development and security.

Following their formal joining at the Ministry of Home Affairs, the officers received guidance on professional responsibilities, leadership, organisational skills and the future development of the force.

Additional Director General Brigadier General Mamunur Rashid and other senior headquarters officials attended the programme.
