A Dhaka court on Sunday placed Md Abdul Hannan, the owner of the motorcycle used in the shooting of Inquilab Mancha spokesperson Sharif Osman Hadi, on a three-day remand.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Didarul Alam passed the order after police produced Hannan, 42, before the court and requested a seven-day remand. The request followed a General Diary (GD) filed in connection with the shooting.
Investigation Officer Sub-Inspector Samim Hasan of Paltan Police Station sought Hannan’s remand for further questioning. Additional Public Prosecutor Shamsuddoha Suman confirmed the matter to the media.
According to the Criminal Procedure Code (Section 54), Hannan was arrested on suspicion and presented before the court. During the hearing, Public Prosecutor Omar Faruq Faruqi stated that the motorcycle used in the attack on Osman Hadi had been widely reported in the media.
The investigating officer identified the motorcycle’s model, and after verification, it was confirmed the vehicle was used in the attempted murder. Faruqi argued that Hannan’s remand was necessary to uncover the full details of the attack, including how the motorcycle was involved.
Hannan, in his defence, explained that he had purchased the motorcycle from Mirpur Mazar Road but had not ridden it due to his illness. He later sold it to a showroom, with the understanding that ownership would be transferred after a couple of months.
The prosecutor also highlighted the motorcycle’s registration, which led to Hannan’s identification as the owner. He added that motorcycles like the one used in the attack had previously been involved in suppressing student movements.
Hannan was arrested by RAB-2 and handed over to Paltan Model Police Station on Sunday.
On Friday, Osman Hadi, a prospective independent candidate for Dhaka-8, was critically injured after being shot by two unidentified assailants on a motorcycle. CCTV footage from the scene showed the attackers targeting Hadi with a firearm.
The motorcycle’s registration number, Dhaka Metro L-54-6375, was traced by RAB-2 through the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA), which confirmed Hannan as the owner.
A case will be filed, and investigations currently continue into the involvement of Hannan and other suspects.
The prosecution emphasised that Hannan had not provided satisfactory answers during questioning, and thus his remand was necessary to recover the weapon used in the attack, trace the whereabouts of the fugitives, and uncover the source of illegal arms.
