Begumganj Upazila Administration and the Roads and Highways Department have demolished over 100 illegal establishments encroaching on a major highway in Noakhali during a special drive on Monday morning.
Officials present during the drive included Noakhali Roads and Highways Department Executive Engineer Md Farid Uddin and Begumganj Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) Mohammad Sadat Hossain.
Begumganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md Kayesur Rahman stated that illegal shops, tin sheds, and extended parts of permanent structures on both sides of the road were bulldozed.
Some corrupt individuals had been occupying road land to run businesses, causing severe traffic congestion and extreme disruption to pedestrian movement at the intersection area for a long time. The encroachers had been given time before the eviction drive to remove their structures.
As they did not vacate within the stipulated time, this strict action was taken in the public interest. Traffic movement in the area has become much more normal following the eviction.
