Inspector (Investigation) Swapan Kumar Sarkar said that the bodies of the deceased are currently kept at Dhaka’s Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital. Legal procedures will be completed after post-mortem examinations there.

Locals reported that a gang of five thieves attempted to break a lock to steal cattle from the house of Yunus Mia in neighbouring Imamnagar village on Sunday night.

When the residents noticed and screamed, people from surrounding areas rushed to the spot. The locals then organised themselves, caught two of the five thieves, and beat them severely.

Police rescued them in critical condition and took them to the hospital, where the on-duty doctor declared them dead.

According to police, several theft cases had earlier been filed against the deceased, Majnu and Din Islam. Both were listed as thieves in police records.

Locals claim that this gang has been involved in multiple theft incidents in the area over the last three years.

They had been caught and handed over to police on several previous occasions. After being caught, the two deceased thieves revealed the names of three more accomplices who were with them.

Police are investigating the matter.
