Chief Adviser’s Special Assistant for Posts, Telecommunications and ICT Faiz Ahmad Taiyeb has said that all accounts involved in online gambling will be blocked, ensuring fairness and compliance.
He made the remarks while presiding over a meeting titled “Actions to Prevent Online Gambling” held on Monday at the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) headquarters in Agargaon, Dhaka.
Faiz Ahmad Taiyeb said that BTRC has already begun sending notices to various online platforms to stop gambling-related activities and that the process will continue. He added that a guideline for media houses on configuring web browsers and AdSense setups has been prepared and is currently under vetting at the Information Ministry. Once approved, it will be distributed to all relevant outlets.
He also informed that a digital advertising guideline, jointly developed with the Information Ministry, is awaiting approval and will be made public upon clearance.
The special assistant said that around 5,000 mobile financial service (MFS) accounts linked to online gambling have already been closed. The government is now working to build a common database where relevant government agencies, platforms, and operators can share and monitor information.
“The government is considering limiting the internet speed of users involved in online betting,” Faiz Ahmad Taiyeb said. “A tripartite meeting with the Election Commission will soon be held to integrate SIM and MFS e-KYC data.”
He added that to free the country from online gambling, the authorities must identify pseudo members of gambling networks, slow traffic to betting links through monitoring, and track the mobile numbers or MFS accounts used for transactions. “After verification, these accounts will be blocked — but the process will strictly ensure fairness and compliance,” he said.
Faiz Ahmad Taiyeb further noted that a coordinated national platform is being developed to preserve social stability, protect youth from moral degradation, and prevent money laundering through joint efforts by all stakeholders.
