One of the sextuplets born at Dhaka Medical College has died while undergoing treatment.
The male newborn passed away at NICH on Sunday evening. Earlier that day, around 9am, a woman named Mokseda Akter Priya (23) from Senbagh Upazila in Noakhali gave birth to six children in the labor ward of the hospital’s Gynecology department.
The death was confirmed by Priya’s sister-in-law, Farzana Akter. She stated that three of the six newborns were placed in NICH at Dhaka Medical College, while the remaining three were admitted to the NICU of a private hospital. One male newborn at Dhaka Medical College died in the evening.
She mentioned that Priya is the wife of expatriate Md Hanif from Khajuria village in Senbagh Upazila, Noakhali. Priya was in her 27th week of pregnancy. She had been regularly consulting a doctor in her local area. Through an ultrasound there, she learned that she was carrying not one or two, but five children.
She added that on September 9, Priya came to her elder sister Lipi’s house in Siddhirganj, Narayanganj. From there, she received treatment at Monowara Hospital. Last night, when she began experiencing pain, she was quickly brought to Dhaka Medical College and admitted. Around 9am on Sunday, she gave birth normally to six children, not five.
On Sunday afternoon, Dr Nilufar Yasmin, a medical officer at the Neonatology Department of Dhaka Medical College, stated that a mother had given birth normally to six newborns in the morning. She was in her 27th week of pregnancy. The babies were premature, with weights ranging from 615 grams to 900 grams.
