A security guard was killed, and two others were injured as a freight train collided with a truck in Sagorika area of Chattogram early Tuesday.
The accident occurred around 4:20am, halting freight train operations from Chattogram, according to railway authorities.
Railway officials said the train had left Chattogram Goods Port Yard (CGPY) for Dhaka at 4:00am and crashed into a truck about 20 minutes later near the Bir Shrestha Matiur Rahman Cricket Stadium.
Eyewitnesses said the truck, carrying rice for Rohingyas, lost control and entered the railway track, hitting the moving train head-on. The collision caused the locomotive and one wagon to derail and overturn.
The deceased was identified as Shamsul Hai, 60, a security guard from Didar Colony in Pahartali. He was crushed under the truck and died on the spot.
Train driver Monirul Islam and his assistant Alamgir were injured and given primary treatment. The remaining wagons were taken back to the CGPY station.
Chattogram Divisional Railway Manager Mostafizur Rahman Bhuiyan said a probe committee had been formed to investigate the cause of the accident.
“The truck broke through the gate barrier and came in front of the train. The gateman was on duty, but whether there was any negligence will be determined after investigation,” he said.
Eastern Railway Divisional Transport Officer Anisur Rahman, however, blamed the gateman’s negligence, saying the gate was open when the truck hit the train’s engine.
Railway officials said rescue work is underway to restore normal train movement.
Chattogram Railway Police Station Officer-in-charge Shahidul Islam said the line is used only for freight and container transport, and passenger train operations remain unaffected.
