Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has expressed satisfaction with the verdict sentencing ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to death in a case over crimes against humanity committed during the July mass uprising.
In its immediate reaction following the judgement delivered on Monday, the party’s Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar said the verdict reflected the longstanding demands of the nation.
He also said the verdict left “no room for questions”, describing it as impartial and meeting “international standards”.
“The trial of those accused of crimes against humanity was a public demand. Today, that demand has been fulfilled, at least in part, through the tribunal’s ruling,” he said.
The day marked a significant moment in the country’s judicial history, he added.
Parwar further said that it was the first time a former head of government had received the maximum penalty, calling the decision “historic and unforgettable”.
International Crimes Tribunal-1 on Monday also sentenced former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal to death and former inspector general of police Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun to five years in prison.
