No form of political obstruction will be tolerated regarding the implementation of the July Charter, said Nurul Islam Moni, chief whip of national parliament, on Friday.
Speaking at a discussion at the Tofazzal Hossain Manik Mia Hall of the National Press Club, held to mark Independence and National Day, he reaffirmed the BNP’s commitment to the charter.
The chief whip said that BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman has pledged to fully implement the July Charter, and the party is actively working toward this goal.
He emphasised that the BNP, having been elected by the people, bears the responsibility to see the charter through.
The chief whip criticised opposition parties for frequently changing their demands, citing calls for local government elections, reforms, or constitutional amendments. He described such shifting positions as reactions to political setbacks.
He also addressed the earlier demand for a proportional representation (PR) system by opposition groups, noting that major democracies such as the United States, the United Kingdom, and India do not use this system. He insisted that elections cannot be delayed on the grounds of such demands.
Regarding the July Charter, he said the BNP did not oppose it but suggested certain amendments, which were later incorporated.
He assured that the July Charter would be implemented through a structured parliamentary process.
Praising the party leadership, the chief whip said Tarique Rahman has set an example of good governance, and the government remains committed to ensuring the fundamental rights of citizens.
